research and planning: proposal 2

Ace Is High

A detective thats bored and has no money receives an email: “Its time to play a game”, he ignores it as he thinks its just an advertisement off some games company. A series of pictures start being sent to him of people he loves dead, he quickly realises that he is in the middle of killing spree. This causes him to start investigating the murders. Each victim has a card on them starting from 2 of spades up to the king, each time the victim is someone closer to him. This is to signify that each card is a higher stake of person. The way that this is creates tension to the detective. The murderer is a sociopath and therefore feels no empathy.

Research and Planning: makeup tests

Today I did a makeup test on Kristian, i used dark makeup to create the image of him being beat up which is how we will want our murderer to look as this will show his personality as a though guy. I created black eyes, scratch marks and bruises to create this look.

Research and planning: auditions

Our auditions went well, we managed to find some more people to be our victims of the murder case we have found a lot of students however we have some older and younger people as well we hope we can use these people to acheive the filming we want.

We didn't need any filming to be done as the roles that we were auditioning for were to see if they fitted our descriptions of the type of people we needed and they did.

Research and planning: script for auditions

(Mainly Kristian's ideas with input from Adam and myself )

Interview plays in the background all the way through.

Detective: so why do you kill people?

Killer: Because there’s alot of bad things in this world, and a lot of bad people. You detective are one of the worst; gambling, drugs, alcoholism. My little game is simply to bring the vermin of this world to where they belong.

Detective: This doesn’t seem much of a game.

Killer: Not all games cost money detective (name)

(Beep Beep – diegetic sound of a phone)

Detective: But no game should cost a life.

Killer in room: and the game begins, psychotic laugh.

(interrogation room)

Detective: You’re my favourite type of murder you know

Killer: And whys that detective?

Detective: Because id enjoy watching you spend the rest of you life rotting in nothing but your memories while your ideas and fantasies burn around you.

Killer: Oh no I’m a completely different type of monster one day ill just disappear, and leave you with nothing, no family, no job, no future, I could just take everything including the life of the ones you love.

(the fight sounds all diegetic lights go out laughter then come back on and hes gone then laughing continues on last scene.)

Research and planning: auditions poster

Today I made an audition poster to put up around the college, we decided that we would hold the auditions in college as this will give us a wide range of people to choose from, we also have a few personal ideas and we are creating a script for the people auditioning to read from.

Research and planning: film poster draft 2

Research and planning: Film poster draft 1

This is my first film poster draft.

Research and planning: costume and props list for film poster

I don't need any costume for my Poster however I will need
  • Dark makeup to create bruises
  • Fake blood
I will only need one prop for my Poster this will be:
  • Ace of spades playing cards
This is because the card is the symbol of trailer. It has all the hidden meanings of our trailer, this means that it should be shown in all my tasks.

research and planning: costume and props list for magazine

Costume:

  • Smart black pants for both detective and murderer
  • Dark coat for murderer
  • Casual top for detective

Props List:
  • Ace playing card

I don't need many props or costume for my magazine as I am trying to get a simple and clean image with nothing else to concentrate on.

Research and planning: Animatic storyboard

http://kristianogradysfilmblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/research-and-planning-animatic.html

I had trouble trying to upload the animatic storyboard to my blogger however my team member managed to get it on his blog so here is the link it it.

This is a very short version and many adjustments are likely to be made however this is our ideas so far.

Research and planning: film magazine draft 2

Research and planning: film magazine draft 1

Research and planning: Film magazine analysis 2

I will analyse this magazine for its effectiveness:

First the effective parts:
  • Th titles and pictures match so you can clearly see the headlines and exactly what there intentions are. The selection is also good as they are a range of shot types.
  • The main story clearly shown as the title of the film is the main feature of the page in large bold writing.
  • There is a very good use of colour as not too much of any colour is used and the distribution of them is fair which adds a great effect to the overall business of this magazine.
Now the ineffective parts:
  • There are too many pictures for a front cover and not enough headlines to explain what will be included in the magazine, this is a poor use of space.
  • There is more than one font used this means there is less fluidity in  the magazine.
  • The very top part of the magazine looks odd and out of place to the rest, this also damages the fluidity of the magazine.

Research and planning: Film magazine analysis 1

I will analyse this magazine for its effectiveness

First the effective parts:

  • The picture is over lapping title, this is a good arrangement of layers as it shows the importance of the picture. The man looks like he is protecting the women and this fits in with the headlines.
  • There is good use of three colour rule, the bright yellow stands out against the grey and even the clothes in this magazine follow the rule too.
  • At the top stars used to show other films, this is a great way of using symbols as to clear up empty space as this magazine wastes none of the space its given.
Now the ineffective parts:
  • The way the barcode has been placed looks wrong and is odd it could have been put in a more discreet place as not to take any audience view that should be concentrated on the headlines or picture.
  • The text over laps the picture this takes away some of the effect the strong picture has on the audience as it should be at the very front focus.
  • The picture is not central, this means it is not in the usual eye line the audience views things, this could take away from making the audience stop and look at the magazine.

Research and planning: Film poster analysis 2

I am going to analyse this poster for its effectiveness:

First the things that are effective:

  • All the important people involved in creating the film are listed at the bottom of the poster this means that many peoples names have been stated and this would help in the marketing of this film as if anyone saw a previous film by one of these people and liked it,they make be encouraged to go and see this film too.
  • The road map over the top of the main image is effective as it gives some insight into the films plot, you can read into what it could be about therefore this intrigues you to watch the film.
  • The fact a tagline is used is very effective as this gives something other than the title to recognise the film by. therefore not only the name but the tagline of the film will stick in your head, making you wonder what it means.
Now the ineffective:

  • The colour scheme is ineffective as it is mainly a red block colour, this makes it difficult to see the text and makes the photo seem unrealistic when this film is in a realistic genre.
  • The title is in two separate colours this means that the title does't flow and therefore may cause people to forget it, this is never effective as the purpose of a poster is to make sure the film name sticks in your mind.
  • There is too much empty block colour space, they haven't laid out this poster to use its space wisely. This impacts on the overall look of the poster making it ineffective.

Research and planning: film poster analysis 1

I am going to analyse this poster in its effectiveness.

First the things that are effective:

  • The size of the title is effective as it is what catches your eye first, this is good as it means the film name is the most important as this is how you get your audiences attention.
  • The colour scheme is very effective as it follows the three colour rule. Especially as the red filter is over the main characters face.
  •  The fact that the main characters face is the main image gives a great insight into the actors in  the film especially when there name is above the title of the film, showing they are a great source to the marketing of this film
Now the ineffective things:
  • The poster doesn't give enough insight into what the film is going to be about as there is no tag line or short explanation which would improve this posters effectiveness greatly.
  • The way the directer is displayed is ineffective as it looks out of place the layout of this could be improved by maybe putting the directors name above the actors name to show his importance rather than being put in a box.
  • The production companies logo is poorly placed as well as it is not very visible and is no where near to the distribution companies logo.

Research and planning: Film name ideas

We discussed film names today the ideas we came up with were all in relation to cards as our plot is based around cards.

Our first idea was: The Game we chose this as it is simple and states exactly what our film is about without giving too much detail. We want them to be intrigued therefore leaving them wanting more.

Our second idea was: Ace of Spades we chose this we know that this is one of the most iconic cards and will attract people as many people play cards.

Our final idea was: Ace is high we chose this as we thought this was the most appropriate to our plot idea. As the higher the card gets the most valuable to the detective the murder is.

Research and planning: Costume and props lists for trailer

We had a meeting today about props and costumes, and we decided on certain things we will need to have for our trailers:
  • Playing Cards
  • Casual clothing for the victims, depending on the age of the victim for example the young children will be in bed therefore have pyjamas on where as the elderly would have much warmer clothing on as her death swill be outside. Also depending on the time of the day depends on wether we will include coats  or just jackets
  • Smart clothing for the killer and the detective for example a black trouser pants
  • A brick for one of the deaths
  • Dark make up to create the bruises on some victims faces
  • Fake blood
  • Recording machine
  • Torch for light on detective in the interrogation scene
  • Gambling chips for poker scene

Research and planning: equipment and software list for all my tasks

This is my list of Equipment i was be using:
  • Slr camera
  • Sony camcorder
  • Iphone
This is my list of Software:

  • Poll junkie

Research and planning: Distribution company logo ideas

I researched distrubution company names so that i had a general idea of what they sounded like.
I then thought about ideas for my own distribution company name which is moon light pictures. I decided on this because i thought it was very unique.
I choose to use a logo creator on the internet as i thought this would help me with design to create this the link to this is: http://www.flamingtext.co.uk/LogoMaker/

The end result was this:

Research and planning: Editing research - my micro element

I went on youtube to look at some trailers from my genre and to see the typical editing techniques used.

This is the trailer from Cape Fear although this is a reasonably old film, the editing techniques used are still relevant. The main editing transitions used are fade to black, dissolve, zoom in and jump cuts. Usually there is a lot of fast cutting this would mean a lot more scences will be needed and a wider range of shots.

In my editing I will have to be able to create the moving of time by using my techniques. I also thought about sound as this is something all members of the group are contributing too, I think that we will need use a voiceover throughout the trailer, that will be the interview thats going to feature in the trailer between the detective and the murderer.

Research and planning: Group roles

We had a meeting and decided that we would all contribute to sound as this was considered to be the hardest task in our genre of film trailer (crime mystery).

The role of Mis en scene is going to be taken on by Kristian O'Grady

The role of Cinematography is going to be taken on by Adam Saxton

The role of Editing is going to be taken on by Bethany Pritt (which is myself)

We decided on these roles as we had the the most ideas personally for each of the roles we have decided to take on.

Research and planning: How to create sound for trailer

I couldn't remember how to use garage band, therefore I researched it on youtube. I am now confident that I can use garage band to help me with my sound. I now need to think about how to create natural sounds for example, keyboard tying, banging, the wind and rain in order to expand my knowledge in sound.

Research and planning: Why this genre?

We choose this genre because we all enjoy watching Crime Mystery drama series, we wanted to be able to create a film trailer that was going to appeal to the people who watch crime mystery series as well as those who watch crime mystery films. This is because we all thought that there was no film out there that had this element therefore we wanted to make a unique film that would fit this much needed slot.

Some of the Crime Dramas that inspired us are:

Research and planning- Story board drawn

This is our drawn draft of the scenes in our film trailer, this will be expanded to individual shots in an animatic storyboard.

Research and planning-storyboard planning

Today we started our story boarding for our film trailer, we came up with a running order and this is how it went:

  • Detective folding in a game of cards, some coloured chips next to him to show that he is low and desperate for money, low key lighting.
  • He gets roughed up and thrown out of the casino. Stands back up and shakes off (raining outside)
  • He gets a message (close up of phone) the message reads 'its time to play a game.'
  • Flash 6 images of victims of the murderer.
  • Then calm again to show killer sat down with the victims pictures on the walls.
  • Speed up flashing of 6 more victims.
  • Cuts to interrogation (quite subdued talking)
  • The killer goes mad throws the table over, starts yelling.
  • Close up of the ace in the detective hands.

Research and planning- collage

I used images from google to create this collage by using photoshop. This helped me to remember how to use photoshop and also find some images from 4 films that are in my genre for my trailer. These are popular films of my genre therefore will allow me to see what my target audience wants to see.

Planning and Research- IMDb genre

This is what i found when I went on IMDb in relation to crime/ mystery this is helpful as it shows what type of plots are popular, this means we can either follow the codes and conventions of these popular crime/ mystery films or go against them. It also helps us to make sure we have our target audience right.  If a certain type of plot is popular in the top films then it is most likely what our target audience wants to see.

Research and Planning: Word it out

This is what i created on word it out, I used the colours of black and blue because they are typical colours associated with crime dramas. I used a curvy type of font as i think it gives a smooth feel to the show. All these words are associated with my trailer in some way. I have included my distribution and production  companies names and my genre.

research and planning: production company logo ideas

This is the logo we decided on for our Production company, Bright Spark Productions.
it was made in photoshop. Since bright spark means Intelligence (If someone is a bright spark they are an intelligent person) we thought that it would be representing an intelligent type of film genre, that being crime/mystery. We decided on this particular idea of a light bulb since we are making a crime film trailer. A light bulb is sometimes depicted as an idea. At which point it went quite well with our idea of crime/mystery. The blue was used because it looks similar to the ultraviolet light used in many crime films where people look for cleaned blood under the light. We used yellow text as it related to the fact that it is a light bulb and because the name is Bright spark productions. We thought this would connatate quite well.
