research and planning: jump cuts, match cuts and cut aways

Jump cut: A jump cut is an abrupt transpiration, typically in a sequential clip that makes the subject appear to jump from one spot to another without continuity.

We watched this clip from breathless and found that there was around 14 jump cuts.

The difference between a match cut and a cut away is that in a match cut the two shots are of the same subject whereas in a cut away the two shots are of two completely different subjects. An example of the differnce of these shots would be: 1st shot, a long shot of a man swimming.
in a match cut the second shot would be of his legs whereas in a cut away it would be of the audience.
